How to name your biotechnology company.
One of the slowest parts of starting a biotechnology company is not doing world-leading research, or finding millions of pounds, or even recruiting a finance officer that the scientists do not want to kill. It is thinking up a name.
When working at Merlin ventures I found that there is a simple solution. Biotech company names can be made up from standard component parts. Thus names are built from the scientific disciplines (immunology, molecular biology etc), medical disciplines if relevant (oncology, cardiovascular), general scientific terms (gene, cell), and a lot of phrases from business-speak and management consultancy, which are meaningless but impressive.
Then there may be some specific terms or phrases we want to add. Say the name of the CEO's home town, dog, mistress.
The result would be names like Avimmunagrosecosyntech, which is a bit much, so we compress the components down so the syllables overlap, and presto, instant Biotech Name.
